Understanding periodontal health
If today's toothpaste is so advanced, why do periodontal problems remain so common?
Modern toothpastes contain increasingly sophisticated formulations, and skilled dental professionals have more tools than ever to support oral health. Yet dental caries, periodontal disease and other oral-health problems remain prevalent worldwide. Aging populations, lifestyle changes, diet, smoking, systemic health and oral bacteria all play a role.
Oral health is important to overall well-being and quality of life. The challenge is not only which ingredients are present in an oral-care formulation, but also how effectively those compounds can interact with the oral environment where they are intended to work.
The periodontium is the support system around every tooth.
It consists of four specialized tissues that surround, support and anchor the teeth to the jaw. When periodontal health deteriorates, the consequences may extend from gum recession and tooth mobility to progressive loss of supporting tissue and bone.
